Dave Chappelle's Block Party

If you've never heard of Dave Chappelle, he's one of the smartest, funniest and - after a $50m TV deal - wealthiest comedians in the US. But if success went to his head, it seems to have come out again, via his mouth. The idea behind this relaxed documentary is very simple: Chappelle decides to hold a free concert in Brooklyn, and we follow him getting it together - which proves to be great fun. Wandering around his Ohio hometown, he invites just about everyone he sees - a black marching band, strangers on the street, old folks, white folks - all with a wisecracking charm that's difficult to resist.

Beneath the frolicking, Chappelle is also at pains to redress the commonly peddled booty-shakin', gun-waving image of African-American culture. His performers are from the more thoughtful end of the spectrum - Kanye West, Erykah Badu, Mos Def, and, topping the bill, a reunion of the Fugees. The music footage has its shortcomings, but it's wisely spread throughout the movie in short bursts, leaving plenty of room for backstage antics, vox pop interviews, and Chappelle simply being spontaneously funny. Altogether, it's an uplifting experience.
