Dave Allen stops Johnny Fisher via fifth round knockout and rules out trilogy: 'Not in his best interests'

Dave Allen produced a superb performance with a fifth-round stoppage of Johnny Fisher in London.

In doing so, the ‘Doncaster De La Hoya' has become the new WBA Intercontinental heavyweight champion, reigniting his career at the age of 33.

If the first match between the two British heavyweight was clouded by controversy, the rematch on home soil at the Copper Box Arena had a definitive ending.

Back in December when the pair fought on the undercard of Oleksandr Usyk vs Tyson Fury 2 in Riyadh, Fisher - AKA ‘The Romford Bull’ - eventually won via split decision to preserve his undefeated record, despite being knocked down for the first time in his career in round five.

However, many observers felt that Allen was robbed of what would have been a career-best victory in Saudi Arabia.

The manner of that defeat seemed to spur Allen on as he sent Fisher to the canvas in round five once again, silencing the Copper Box Arena in the process and, this time, got the job done.

With just seconds left of the round, Allen caught Fisher clean with a one-two combination, sending his friend to the floor again which resulted in Fisher’s camp throwing in the towel.

It is now one apiece between Allen and Fisher, but the latter has already ruled out a potential trilogy taking place to settle the score once and for all.

Speaking to DAZN after the fight, Allen said: “He’s my friend. He’s a very good friend of mine. I wouldn’t allow [a trilogy fight] to happen, because it’s not in his best interests.”

Earlier in the night, George Liddard defeated Aaron Sutton with a fifth round stoppage after knocking his opponent down three times over the course of the bout, the first inside 40 seconds.

That win sees Liddard set up clash down the line with the newly crowned British middleweight champion Kieron Conway after he stopped Gerome Warburton inside four rounds to claim the famous Lonsdale belt.

Elsewhere, Jimmy Sains picked up an impressive win and the Southern Area Middleweight title with a 100-90, 100-91, 98-92 points decision over Gideon Onyenani.
