Davante Adams on Packers adding Odell Beckham Jr.: ‘Hopes are up there pretty high’

Green Bay Packers receiver Davante Adams is back in recruiting mode, and even though his team didn’t add cornerback Stephon Gilmore the last time around, Adams is staying optimistic about the chances of the Packers adding receiver Odell Beckham Jr.

Green Bay is one of the team’s trying to sign Beckham Jr. after he cleared waivers on Tuesday.

“I learned my lesson with that (Gilmore), but they are pretty high, I’m not going to lie. Hopes are up there pretty high,” Adams said Wednesday. “Been talking to him a little bit. We’ll see what happens. I don’t expect anything to happen, but if it does, that’d be great.”

Adams said the two receivers have talked recently about the possibility of Beckham Jr. coming to Green Bay.

“We’ve definitely entertained the idea,” Adams said. “He’s got a nice home over here if he’s ready for that.”

The two are “pretty good friends” and have kept in touch, talking several times a year. Both receivers came into the NFL in 2014, Beckham as a first-round pick of the Giants and Adams as a second-round pick of the Packers.

He also isn’t worried about how Beckham Jr. would fit into the receiver room and offense, and he’s confident the two-time All-Pro would be happy being the Robin to Adams’ Batman in Green Bay.

“I’m pretty secure in what I bring to this offense and this team, and I know what his mindset is based off what he just came from, he’d be happy to deal with whatever. He had just one catch for six yards in his last game, so I can guarantee you we can get him more than that over here,” Adams said.

Adams believes the receiver room as currently constructed could win a Super Bowl, but he also said adding a player like Beckham Jr. could help take away some of the double teams that often come his way during games.

“Just knowing that’s Odell Beckham Jr. over there, you can’t just leave him one-on-one without whatever corner,” Adams said.

Through six games with the Browns, Beckham Jr. caught 17 passes for 232 yards and no touchdowns. He has five seasons with 1,000 or more receiving yards and three with 10 or more touchdown catches.
