Daughter sees parents killed in crash after Christmas church service in Townsville

A husband and wife have died after being hit by a car in a Christmas Eve accident witnessed by their daughter in the north Queensland city of Townsville.

The man, 76, and woman, 75, both from Cairns, were struck by an SUV on Ross River Road in the Townsville suburb of Hermit Park.

They could not be revived and died at the scene.

The driver has not been charged, however investigators are still trying to determine what happened.

A Queensland Fire and Emergency Services spokesperson said it was an incredibly distressing accident scene.

The couple's 43-year-old daughter spoke to police at the scene of the accident.

All three had just been to a Christmas Eve church service and were walking when the accident occurred, just after 7:00pm.

Paramedics said the distraught 36-year-old male driver of the car that hit the couple was taken to Townsville hospital for treatment.

Police Acting Inspector Steve Batterham said they were appealing for witnesses to come forward.

"It's early stages, the forensic crash unit who attended took a number of photographs and distance markings and the rest of it so and they'll be able to establish exactly speed and those sort of things but at this stage we'll just have wait to see the outcome," he said.
