Daughter saved from an overturned vehicle thanks to this life-saving app

When a woman became trapped in an overturned vehicle at the side of a dual carriageway, an app helped the police to find and rescue her.

According to our sister publication TeessideLive, the incident occurred in North Yorkshire at about 8pm on Friday evening (February 21 ).

The crash victim had no idea where she was and was unable to get out of the car, which had overturned and veered off the side of the road.

In the dark, other drivers didn't spot the Mazda vehicle, meaning no one stopped to help or report the accident.

Luckily, the woman used the What3Words mobile app, which notified North Yorkshire Police of her precise whereabouts.

The technology can pinpoint a person's location using a series of satellites.

If someone gets lost, they can download the free app to their phone, which will provide them with three unique words. When passed on to the emergency services, the words will reveal where they are.

The woman contacted her dad in Shrewsbury, who then explained to her how to use the app.

Her father then rang the control room providing the three unique words that enabled police to easily track her down.

Officers were at the scene within four minutes and the woman was freed from the car.

North Yorkshire Police Roads Policing Group said: "We kept up a three-way conversation with daughter, dad and control for the four minutes it took officers to get on scene.

"Driver released and luckily okay.

"We can not stress the importance and benefits of this location tool."
