Daughter's fury after dad's final wish to die in Scotland thwarted by red tape

A carer has claimed her dad’s dying wish to return to Scotland was thwarted by authorities.

William Colburn, 77, died last month in London after months battling to move north of the Border.

Daughter Alison Barnes said William, who had Parkinson’s disease and lung cancer, hoped to transfer to a hospice near Glasgow but delays meant it was too late.

Alison, 58, said: “His last wish was to return to Scotland and that was taken from him.”

William, who grew up in Perth, went into Homerton University Hospital in Hackney in August. Alison says her dad was told he would transfer to a nursing home until he could move to Scotland but was fobbed off by authorities.

The hospital said funding issues often led to delays in transferring patients to other areas.

Hackney Council said: “Mr Colburn was referred to nursing homes and one was in the process of assessing him when he died. We offer our sympathies at this difficult time.”
