Daughter of Maryhill dinner lady elected first female leader of UK's biggest union

Glasgow-born trade unionist Christina McAnea has been elected as the first female leader of UNISON, the UK's biggest union.

Ms McAnea succeeds Dave Prentis as UNISON general secretary after winning 47.7% of the vote.

The daughter of a Maryhill dinner lady, she grew up in Drumchapel and left school at 16, before going to university at 22 and becoming a housing officer for Glasgow City Council.

On hearing the news, she tweeted: "We made history ! Thanks so much for all the support. I may be the first woman GS in UNISON but I won’t be the last."

Back in October, Ms McAnea told the Daily Record how she was first inspired to stand up for workers' rights after hearing a speech by trade unionist Jimmy Reid in the early 1970s.

Ms McAnea has worked for the trade union movement for over 25 years and prior to her appoinment as UNISON leader held the title of Assistant General Secretary.

Unison represents more than 1.3 million workers across the country, specifically those who provide public services, working in the public, private or voluntary sectors.
