Daughter of ICU nurse begs everyone to stay at home during coronavirus lockdown

A teenager whose mum is a frontline ICU nurse has urged those selfishly breaking the lockdown rules to stay at home.

In a poignant message Nicola Rogers, 18, posted a series of pictures of people flouting government measures as she went out for her daily exercise in Gorton, Manchester.

She begged people not to be "selfish" and to protect frontline NHS staff like her mother - who works at Wythenshawe Hospital, the Manchester Evening News reports.

Pictures show people sunbathing, sitting in groups, and one person riding a quad bike, at the beauty spot on Sunday afternoon.

Government advice states that people should only leave the house for essential shopping, health reasons, and for daily exercise including a walk, cycle or run.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock said the government could take "further action" if people break the rules.

Nicola wrote on Facebook : "We went out for our one form of exercise today (walking the dog) to Debdale park and yet people were chilling near the reservoir, sunbathing, on quad bikes, congregating with friends and having picnics.

"Why is it so difficult to understand that there should be none of this at the moment?

"What is it going to take for people to stay at home?

"We already have a death toll of nearly 5,000 and climbing. kids dying, elderly dying, healthcare workers dying and yet people still insist on activities like this.

"It is simply the epitome of selfish."

Nicola urged people to think about NHS workers, like her mum, who has been working round the clock to care for patients with COVID-19.

"My mum works as a sister on the ICU ward looking after covid-19 patients at Wythenshawe hospital and she tells me that she has already has nightmares about it and dreads going to work," Nicola said.

"I have to watch nurses dying on the news whilst my mum goes to work at the frontline.

"I lay in bed at night hoping my mum will be safe and not one of the unfortunate ones.

"I don’t want to lose a parent at age 18. Yet people are still breaking the rules despite being told time and time again not to."

"Stay at home unless you are going out to buy essential items or going for your one form of exercise a day," Nicola added.

"Key workers are out there for you whilst sacrificing the health and safety of both themselves and their family.

"You are being asked to sit on your damn sofa. Not go to war. Not go to the front line. And people can’t even do that? God help the people of the 21st century."
