Daughter given chip shop as wedding gift after parents retire from family business

A couple who were given a chip shop as a wedding gift are now continuing the family frying tradition by taking over the family business.

Abbey Fryer Fish Bar had been run by Helen and Steve Hadjistasi since 1996.

However, they decided to pass their Abbey Hulton business on to their daughter Myranda Koulli and her partner Tonino when they retired in 2021, Stoke-on-Trent Live reports.

Now the new owners are keen to make sure they do them proud in the business after decorating and sprucing it up.

Myranda, 30, had previously worked in the Leek Road shop when her parents were in charge.

She said: "When we got married, it was their wedding gift to us when they retired.

"It was just a lovely gift. We want to do good here and make them proud."

Twenty-eight-year-old Tonino said: "They wanted to pass it on. "Myranda knows the community from working here. It's still the same family.

"We have changed some things. We've put a bit of diversity in the menu. We're from a Cypriot background, so we've put things like halloumi fries in there, just to give it a bit of a twist."

He added: "When they told us they wanted to finish, we were just ready to start and anxious to get in there. There's a really good customer base here, the people round here are really friendly. It's a nice community."

Now the pair are welcoming customers to the new-look chippy.
