Daughter drives dad's coffin to funeral in final loving gesture

A daughter drove her dad’s coffin to his funeral in a final loving gesture to the man who taught her to drive.

Helen Grady, 61, from Widnes had spent the last nine weeks over in County Mayo, Ireland looking after her terminally ill dad.

Bill O’Garra, 81, died on Monday but due to coronavirus restrictions no other family member from Widnes - apart from their mum - could attend his funeral yesterday.

Her son, Michael, 37, said they were sad not to be able to say goodbye to their grandad in person but were able to watch a live stream of the service online.

Michael said: “He passed away on the Monday and he was buried on Wednesday. They do things quickly over there.

“The funeral directors sometimes let one of the men drive the car, but nobody wanted to do it, so my mum said I'll do it."

The video taken by the funeral company shows Michael’s mum wearing a leopard print mask, calmly driving her dad's coffin to the church.

The footage pans to the coffin in the back of the funeral hearse before cutting back to Michael's mum as she turns the car towards her dad’s final resting place.

Michael said: “It was a shame we couldn't all get over to the funeral because of the restrictions, so we watched it all online yesterday.

“And seeing that video of my mum just tickled us.

“My granddad taught all his kids to drive and it's just come full circle that she's driven him to his funeral.”

Michael said his mum spent her entire career as a nurse and worked at Halton Hospital before retiring six years ago.

When he asked his mum why she had stepped up to drive her own dad to his funeral, she replied: “It's the last thing you can do for a loved one.”
