Dating survey reveals which cities will get intimate on Valentine's Day

Research from a discount codes website has revealed Newport is the best place to get lucky this Valentine’s Day.

The site, which surveyed 2,000 people aged 18 and above, found that people in Newport are most likely to be sexually intimate on the first date compared to any other place in the UK.

In comparison, those who live in cities Belfast and Middlesbrough wait more than 10 dates before getting between the sheets.

The research, commissioned by  vouchercloud, looked at the dating habits of 2,000 members of the British public aged 18 and above, and found that Newport, Swansea and Portsmouth are among the best cities in the UK to visit for a romantic encounter.

According to the data, people in Newport are most likely to be sexually intimate on the first date, compared to people who reside in cities such as Belfast, Middlesbrough and Gloucester, who wait more than 10 dates before getting intimate with someone. The research also found that almost half (44%) of Newport residents prefer to go to a restaurant on the first date and 50% said they typically split the bill.

The top five cities where people are most likely to ‘get lucky’ this Valentine’s Day are:

  1. Newport
  2. Swansea
  3. Portsmouth
  4. Kingston upon Hull
  5. Peterborough

When asked about their favourite first date locations, more than a third (35%) of respondents said that a restaurant was their favourite first date venue, compared to 13% for the pub and 12% who said they prefer to go to the cinema.

Participants were also asked how many dates it took to ‘become official’ with their current or most recent partner. Almost one fifth (16%) selected 11 dates or more, followed by 14% who answered four dates and 13% who said they ‘were official’ after three dates.

The survey also looked at how respondents met their partner, with more than a fifth (23%) meeting through friends. In comparison, 21% said they met their significant other in a bar, pub or nightclub, while a further 17% said they met their partner through work.

Greg Le Tocq, vouchercloud’s founder, said: “Finding a partner can be one of life’s greatest challenges and in the run-up to Valentine’s Day especially, the focus often falls on dating and romance. With that in mind, we decided to look at the dating habits of the British public.

“It’s fascinating to delve into how people approach dating and relationships in 2020, including how people most commonly meet their partners and how people in different cities across the UK approach sex, as well as the most popular first date activities in 2020.”
