Dating app Tinder announces plans to crack down on catfishing

Dating in the modern world can be tricky.

One such issue facing people looking for love, particularly if using online dating sites, is the potential of meeting a catfish.

For the uninitiated, a catfish is someone who lies online to make others believe they are someone or something they are not - but popular dating app Tinder has come up with a way to stop catfishes in their tracks.

They plan on cracking down on the dishonest practice with a photo verification feature to help users tell if the person they are talking to is who they claim to be, report Birmingham Live.

In future users will be verified by being asked to take a number of real-time selfies via a human-assisted AI.

If, after being assessed, the photos match the profile picture, accounts will be given a blue tick verifying the person's appearance is real.

It is hoped the plans will make the dating app safer as well as preventing people from creating fake profiles.

"Every day, millions of our members trust us to introduce them to new people, and we're dedicated to building innovative safety features powered by best-in-class technology that meet the needs of today's daters," said Elie Seidman, Tinder chief executive.

"I'm proud to share these updates, which represent an important step in driving our safety work forward at an unmatched scale."

Photo verification is currently being tested in select markets before becoming more widely available throughout 2020.

Tinder is one of the world's leading dating apps and has two billion views per day and one million dates per week worldwide.
