Dates confirmed for Queen's Platinum Jubilee four-day Bank Holiday weekend in 2022

The dates have been set for a special four-day bank holiday to celebrate the Queen's Platinum Jubilee in 2022.

Her Majesty will celebrate 70 years on the throne next June, with the Government setting £28m aside for a four-day weekend of celebrations.

The late May Day bank holiday is being moved into June - with people given a second extra free day off work.

Buckingham Palace has now confirmed the long bank holiday weekend will take place from June 2-5.

The 'once in a generation' occurrence will be marked by a series of events celebrating Queen Elizabeth II's 70 years on the throne. She succeeded her father in 1952.

The Queen actually began her reign on February 6 - but as that was also the date of King George VI's death, she pushed it back to the summer.

The monarch will be 96 by the time the landmark is reached, making her the first sovereign to reign for seven decades.

Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden previously said: "Her Majesty's Platinum Jubilee will be a truly historic moment – and one that deserves a celebration to remember.

"We can all look forward to a special, four-day jubilee weekend, when we will put on a spectacular, once-in-a-generation show that mixes the best of British ceremonial splendour with cutting edge art and technology.

"It will bring the entire nation and the Commonwealth together in a fitting tribute to Her Majesty's reign."
