Date set for when European Super League plans to get underway

The President of the European Super League wants the competition to get underway as soon as August.

Florentino Perez, who is also Real Madrid president, spoke to the press for the first time on Monday following the bombshell announcement of the breakaway league.

Perez tried to provide some background on the proposal and explain why he believes it would be in football's best interest.

He made wild claims including 'no one cares about Champions League football before the quarter-final stage', 'matches could be made shorter' and 'younger fans aren't interested in the sport anymore'.

He also put a date on when he'd like to see the competition commence.

"If we can start the Super League in August, we would do it," Perez told El Chiringuito.

"We will do our best to start this year. We want to reach an agreement with UEFA and the other parties involved. We will talk with UEFA, FIFA and not only."

So far the proposal has been met with nothing but resistance from fans, pundits, clubs, journalists and even players.

James Milner made it clear he is against the idea following Liverpool's 1-1 draw with Leeds on Monday night, becoming one of the first people directly impacted by the plan to speak out against it. Reds boss Jurgen Klopp did the same.
