Date set for when Andy Burnham is likely to become prime minister

  • Andy Burnham is expected to become the next Labour leader on 17 July, according to the timetable released by the party's National Executive Committee.
  • Nominations for the Parliamentary Labour Party will open on Thursday, 9 July, with hustings for MPs and peers scheduled for Monday, 13 July.
  • Labour affiliates, including trade unions and socialist societies, will submit their candidate nominations between 15 and 16 July.
  • If only one candidate secures the required nominations, they will be confirmed as leader at a special conference on Friday, 17 July.
  • Should multiple candidates emerge, local Labour branches will nominate between 20 and 31 July, followed by a member ballot from 6 to 27 August, with the result announced on 29 August.
