'Get on with it': Hobart's Bridge of Remembrance gets completion date after two-month delay

The final span of Hobart's controversial Bridge of Remembrance will finally go ahead in what will be a fourth attempt next week.

Contractors Fulton Hogan have confirmed the lifting of the $11 million bridge will occur on the weekend of January 18 to 21, after receiving approval from the Department of State Growth.

Poor weather and concerns about the bridge's aesthetic appearance have forced the raising of the span to be postponed until now.

The Tasman Highway, one of Hobart's main access routes, will be closed from Brooker Avenue to the Tasman Bridge from 7:00pm on January 18 to 6:00am January 21.

It was originally hoped the bridge — which will link Hobart's Domain with the Cenotaph — would have been installed by November 2018, in time for Remembrance Day.

The first weekend of February has been set as a back-up weekend in the event of more poor weather.

The bridge will also provide access to Soldiers Memorial Avenue which contains trees and plaques honouring World War I soldiers.

Steve Carey, the president of the Friends of Soldiers Memorial Avenue, said delayed works had been disappointing to the group which had planned Remembrance Day events to coincide with the planned opening.

"It seemed a fitting memorial, so many were disappointed that that plan for many reasons couldn't be fulfilled," he said.

He said it was a relief to see works on the bridge progress.

"It's had some false starts and we understand that, and it would be nice to finally bring it to completion."

The announcement sparked a flurry of comments on ABC Hobart's Facebook Page, many sceptical about the project.

"And again que the Benny Hill music," said David Dare

Ethan O'neal was not a fan.

"Looks horrible!!!! Going to be an eyesore if anything," he wrote

"What a waste of time and ratepayers' money," said Mike Donovan.

But Helen Woolcock was happy to see progress.

"Let's hope the weather is favourable and let's get on with it," she said.
