Date set for inquest into death of Sunderland gran Joan Hoggett who was stabbed in shop where she worked

A date has been set for an inquest into the death of grandmother who was stabbed in the shop where she worked.

Joan Hoggett suffered 29 knife injuries during an attack in the One Stop Shop on Sea Road, Sunderland, in September 2018.

Ethan Mountain was suffering from paranoid schizophrenia when he pulled a mask over his face and entered the shop where the 62-year-old was nearing the end of her shift.

Mountain, of Heaton Gardens, South Shields, admitted manslaughter with diminished responsibility but denied murdering the grandmother – claiming he was “not in the right frame of mind” at the time of the offence.

A Newcastle Crown Court judge ordered a jury to find the 19-year-old not guilty of one count of murder on the grounds that his mental responsibility for the killing was diminished.

Mountain, who was admitted to a psychiatric hospital in 2017 and treated with antipsychotic medication, was told he would spend an indefinite length of time in a secure hospital.

Sunderland Senior Coroner Derek Winter opened an inquest after Mrs Hoggett’s death which had previously been adjourned until the outcome of the criminal case.

Mr Winter set a date for a full inquest to take place at a brief hearing at the HM Coroner’s Court in Sunderland's Civic Centre on Wednesday.

The inquest has been set for the week of November 8.

He said: “In terms of November 8, it will give us all time to hear evidence and any witnesses likely to be called should be warned for that week.

“Once an independent report is at hand I will make arrangements for formal disclosure.”
