Date set for 2022 Royal Canberra Show

The Royal Canberra Show will return next year after bushfires and the COVID-19 pandemic led to the cancellation of the 2021 festivities.

The Royal National Capital Agricultural Society on Thursday announced the show will go ahead over the weekend of February 25 to 27.

The volunteer-run society said it had survived off territory and federal government assistance, recruiting four staff members to plan the show, which would provide work for about 2000 people.

Organisers are "working against the clock" to plan the event, which normally requires 12 months of preparations, they said in a statement.

"We are currently working against the clock to ensure that our show will be full of our farm animals and the entertainment that everyone has come to expect from Canberra's oldest and most-loved all-ages event," the statement read.

Public tickets will need to be purchased in advance online to provide maximum ability for contact tracing.

"We look forward to a bumper show. Our customers have waited a long time to get out of their homes and off their farms to compete in events from a champion hack to the best fruitcake in the district."

Horse entries closed on October 29 and have exceeded expectations, with the organisers bringing in portable stable from interstate.

More than 1300 horses will be competing for over $40,000 in prize money.
