Date proposed for Ireland's new bank holiday and it's just weeks away

A new Bank Holiday in Ireland to coincide with Thanksgiving in the US has been proposed.

Talks are now believed to be at the advanced stage to reward the people of Ireland with a new bank holiday after the pandemic.

And one Fine Gael deputy wants that bank holiday to fall at the same time as thanksgiving - which falls on November 25 this year.

Galway East TD Ciaran Cannon says it could create more links with the US as well as reward frontline workers.

This ties in with a new study by Fáilte Ireland which estimates that a bonus Bank Holiday could generate up to €20million in tourism revenue.

However, a number of other TDs are reported to support an introduction of a banker in September - as they claim would be more beneficial to the economy.

But Tanaiste Leo Varadkar has said that no decision has yet been made on the date.

Speaking from New York, Mr Varadkar said: "It may even require primary legislation so that needs to be borne in mind too. The idea is around remembrance of the fact that 5,000 people or more have passed away and they have families who are grieving, and also a way of recognising volunteers as well as workers who made a special effort."
