Date Liverpool will discover its Eurovision fate after shortlist announced

Liverpool will discover if it will host the Eurovision Song Contest in the coming months.

The BBC announced earlier this morning Liverpool had made the shortlist to host the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC). The city will go head to head against Birmingham, Glasgow, Leeds, Manchester, Newcastle, and Sheffield.

The ESC 2023 was supposed to be held in Ukraine - continuing the tradition of the previous winners hosting - but the Eurovision Broadcasting Union (EBU) deemed it unsafe to do so given the ongoing conflict in the country. After several other nations including Spain and Germany placed their bids to host the job was ultimately handed to the UK.

Liverpool City Council and the Combined Authority must now work together with partners across the region to craft a detailed bid in the city's favour. Though the United Kingdom will be hosting, it is "still Ukraine's show" and expected to be representative of the country.

Liverpool's bidding team has already hinted they will pay tribute to Ukraine and its communities but details are firmly under wraps. Liverpool and the rest of the United Kingdom will discover the EBU's decision sometime in the autumn.
