Date Government emergency 'siren' will sound on all mobile phones in UK

A new system that will give the Government and emergency services the ability to send alerts directly to mobile phones launched earlier this month, and a new "siren" message is due to be sent out soon.

The Cabinet Office said the alerts system will "transform the UK’s warning and informing capability", meaning urgent messages can be quickly sent to almost 90% of mobile phones in any defined area.

The system will soon be tested across the UK, after successful trials in East Suffolk and Reading. The Government will send a nationwide alert next month, which will see people receive a test message on their mobile phones.

Alerts will read: "This is a test of Emergency Alerts, a new UK government service that will warn you if there’s a life-threatening emergency nearby. In an actual emergency, follow the instructions in the alert to keep yourself and others safe.

"Visit gov.uk/alerts for more information. This is a test. You do not need to take any action."

In Wales, the test messages will also be sent in Welsh.

The Government said Emergency Alerts will be used very rarely, only being sent where there is an immediate risk to people’s lives, so people may not receive an alert for months, or even years.

People will receive the test alert on the evening of Sunday, April 23.
