Date given for work to begin on large Sainsbury's off busy road

Ground works are due to start next week on a long-awaited Sainsbury's supermarket off the A612 Colwick Loop Road.

The main contractor, Base Build, has been clearing vegetation in preparation for construction work to begin.

The supermarket and petrol station are expected to be open by the autumn, the retailer confirmed.

Sainsbury’s property director, Patrick Dunne, said: “Colwick has told us loud and clear that they want us to open our doors as soon as possible and we’re doing everything we can to do just that.

"We will continue to keep the community updated as we build this exciting new store, including how residents can apply to join the local colleague team.”

Works from next week will involve levelling out the site, installing store foundations and the provision of drainage infrastructure

This work is expected to be completed by May.

Following this phase of the programme, the steel frame will be be put up as the store takes shape.

The proposals for the Sainsbury's, set to include an Argos, were given the green light by Gedling Borough Council last summer.

More than 100 jobs are expected to be created as part of the development.

Leader of the council, Councillor John Clarke, said: "The land that this will be built on has been crying out for development for a number of years and this is an exceptionally good use of a brownfield site.

"I know it’s been a long process to get to this stage but it’s going to be great to see the end result and what it will do for the area.

"There’s going to be over 100 jobs created for the local area as part of this development.

"We’ve got the Colwick Industrial Estate on one side of the site and Netherfield to the other.

"I’m sure that, once the store opens, it’s going to be a popular, well-used addition to the borough.”

Planning permission was originally approved for a supermarket and petrol station back in 2014 but the project didn't progress.

Sainsbury’s subsequently reviewed the requirements for the store and made minor amendments to the plans.
