Date for first official Government Level Five lockdown review this month as Covid-19 optimism grows

The Government will review Level Five lockdown in mid-November to discuss if it is moving Ireland in the right direction.

In the plans originally announced over a week and a half ago now, the Taoiseach said there is to be an official review four weeks into the measures.

And while NPHET meet on a bi-weekly basis, the Cabinet is expected to meet solely to discuss Level Five around the four week mark on November 14.

Here they will look at expert advice from NPHET and see if the lockdown is working - however it's too early to say if any change to restrictions will be made on that date.

Optimism is growing however after the major dip to 416 new cases in the country on Saturday.

The Department of Health announced the latest cases figures along with five more people losing their lives.

Speaking after the announcement, Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan praised people's effort but said there is work to do.

Dr Holohan said: “We are making progress in suppressing the current rise of COVID-19.

"Ireland is currently one of only four countries in the EU with a reduction in its 7-day incidence.

"Nationally, our reproductive number has reduced to about 1.0.

“We are working collectively to achieve suppression, but it is too early to ease our efforts.

"The incidence is decreasing in young adults but it continues to rise in those aged over 75.

"We have more to do but we are on the right track.”
