A major Liverpool art gallery is set to close its doors in autumn ahead of a two-year transformation.
Tate Liverpool, situated at the Albert Dock since 1988, is set to undergo a £29.7 million overhaul which will see a number of its existing spaces redesigned. It has now been confirmed that work is set to begin in the autumn with the gallery closing its doors on Monday October 16 and remaining closed until its reopening in 2025.
Parts of the Liverpool Biennial will be one of the last exhibitions to run at Tate Liverpool ahead of its closure, with the festival taking over one of its spaces from June 10 to September 17, 2023. The gallery will also be extending its current JMW Turner and Lamin Fofana exhibition until September 24, 2023.

Free exhibitions at the gallery will remain on show until October 15, 2023. The project has received backing from the Government’s Levelling Up fund with £10 million awarded to support the redevelopment in October 2021.
During the two year closure, Tate Liverpool will continue to host events and one-off projects at other spaces across the city. Plans for Tate Liverpool’s off-site programme for 2024 will be announced in the coming months.
Following the grant from the Government’s Levelling Up Fund, the three decade old gallery is now working with 6a architects to reimagine its spaces to meet the scale and ambition of today’s most exciting artists. They redesign will also focus on creating new social spaces within the waterfront gallery.

So now is the time for us to reimagine the gallery for the 21st century and strengthen the connection between art and people.
“Announcing this temporary closure gives everyone who loves Tate Liverpool a chance to return to the gallery before we begin the transformation process. It is also important to us that our audiences know they will still be able to engage with Tate Liverpool during the closure period through the high-quality work we deliver within the city’s communities.”
