Date Boris Johnson is expected to make next Covid announcement

The Prime Minister has held a number of briefings from Downing Street alongside experts in the last month as more people catch the Omicron variant.

Latest figures for Nottinghamshire show the highly transmissible strain of coronavirus is now infecting hundreds of people every day, with infection rates now standing at at least 1,000 per 100,000 people in all but one area of Notts.

Despite this, and hundreds of thousands of cases elsewhere in England, the Government has confirmed there will be no new additional restrictions brought in before the New Year.

In a thread of tweets, Mr Johnson wrote: "We will continue to monitor the data carefully, but there will be no new restrictions introduced in England before the New Year.

"However, I would urge everyone to continue to act cautiously given the rising number of Omicron cases.

"Most importantly I urge everyone to get their first, second or booster jab without delay to protect yourselves and your loved ones."

Last week, the Prime Minister confirmed data will be monitored on an "hour-by-hour" basis and the government will take action if necessary, Liverpool Echo reports.

He said: "Unfortunately I must say to people that we will have to reserve the possibility of taking further action to protect the public, to protect public health, to protect our NHS.

"We won't hesitate to take action."

If the Prime Minister decides action is required, the exact nature of the new restrictions will be confirmed at a Downing Street press conference.

The date of the next briefing has yet to be confirmed, but these are often announced at short notice.

However, yesterday's confirmation that no rules would be imposed before the New Year suggests there will be no Downing Street press conference until 2022.
