Date announced for work to restart on £40m Gedling Access Road

Work on the next phase of the new Gedling Access Road has been given the go ahead to start in May after being delayed for seven weeks.

The £40 million project includes building a new 3.8km single carriageway road that will provide a link between the B684 Mapperley Plains and the A612 Trent Valley Road/Nottingham Road.

Running alongside the road will be a three-metre wide cycleway and footpath which will lead to Gedling Country Park.

Construction began at the start of the year, but the next stage at Burton Road to develop a key junction was halted due to coronavirus.

The creation of the junction was meant to start with the closing of Burton Road on March 23 until the end of the year, but due to lockdown it has remained open.

Councillor John Cottee, Chairman of the Communities and Place Committee at Nottinghamshire County Council, previously said the "sensible steps" were needed to minimise risk and disruption.

However, Via East Midlands on behalf of Nottinghamshire County Council announced a new commencement date for work to begin.

From May 11, Burton Road will be closed to allow for the construction of the new junction to start with the A612 Nottingham Road/Trent Valley road.

This closure will be in place until December 20 - only a week behind the previous schedule, despite the delay in starting.

All traffic except for buses will be diverted around the A612 and then the Colwick Loop Road back to Shearing Hill.

Traffic which uses the bus gate in Stoke Lane will be subject to fixed penalty notices - pedestrians will still have access.

There will be camera enforcement along Stoke Lane which will be reviewed once the Gedling Access Road is open in Summer 2021.

The multi-million-pound road is designed to take pressure off a number of local routes and has been under discussion for 50 years.
