A 'talented and much loved' data scientist died after 'falling into the canal' near his city centre apartment an inquest opening heard.

The body of Jack Leonard Johnson, 26, was recovered from the water on Tuesday December 15 last year.

Today, Tuesday April 27, an inquest into his death was formally opened.

The hearing was told that Mr Johnson, who was born in Berkshire and worked as a data scientist, was living at Kelso Place, an apartment block close to the Bridgewater Canal in the St George's Island area of Castlefield, at the time of his death.

It is believed he fell into the canal whilst walking home and 'intoxicated' the hearing was told.

In a statement read during the hearing, Senior Police Coroner's Officer Paul Devine said: "Mr Johnson had been drinking in Manchester, visiting friends during that time.

"He was walking home alone, intoxicated, and appears to have fallen into the canal."

"Friends found his bag floating in the canal" he added.

"A police underwater search team subsequently discovered his body."

An initial post-mortem examination said results of toxicology and histology samples were needed.

Once they were returned, a pathologist recorded cause of death as 1A) drowning with alcohol and cocaine use "indirect contributions" the hearing was told.

Assistant Coroner Fiona Borrill said the police investigation into Mr Johnson's death had concluded that there were "no suspicious circumstances and no evidence of third party involvement."

However, she said it would be for a coroner who hears the full inquest to officially rule on the cause of death.

She formally adjourned the hearing to a date to be fixed.

She told Mr Johnson's father and sister who were listening into the hearing: "Firstly can I offer my sincere condolences on the loss of Jack in these awful circumstances.

"He was obviously an extremely talented and much loved young man and your loss must be totally unbearable."
