Morning everyone. Australians face tighter gun control laws as the states and the Albanese government reacted swiftly to the horrific terror attack at Bondi beach. Our reporting reveals how Sydney’s suburbs are awash with guns. Plus, we talk to members of the Jewish community about their devastating loss, and there are more reports and analysis on Sunday’s tragedy.

Overseas, Rob Reiner’s son has been arrested over the death of the celebrated Hollywood director and his wife.

Australia

  • Hard to fathom | The Jewish Australian community is in deep shock after the “joy” of Hanukah celebrations was “snatched away” by the horrific events in Bondi. We look at Chabad Lubavitch, the organisation behind the Hanukah event targeted by the attackers, and have a visual guide to how the attack unfolded and an explainer about what we know so far.

  • Gun crackdown | Gun owners face limits on the number of firearms they could hold and licences would only be issued to Australian citizens under tougher new controls flagged by Anthony Albanese. The prime minister dismissed reports that the alleged gunmen had been linked to an Islamic State terror cell in Australia, saying there was “no evidence” for the claims. He also hit back at claims by his Israeli counterpart, Benjamin Netanyahu, that Australia’s recognition of a Palestinian state earlier this year had contributed to Sunday’s attack at Bondi.

  • Misinformation ‘nightmare’ | A Pakistani man living in Australia has spoken of his “deep trauma” and said his life had become a “nightmare” after his photo was widely circulated on social media falsely labelling him as one of the shooters in the Bondi beach terror attack. The man who tackled one of the gunmen on Sunday, Ahmed al-Ahmed, has been feted as a hero for his efforts but is still recovering in hospital after being shot at by the attackers. A GoFundMe page for him has raised more than $1.3m in less than 24 hours.

  • England’s ‘dog’ days | Ben Stokes has called on his England players to summon up the rage witnessed against India in the summer and show some “dog” as they look to keep their slim Ashes hopes alive in Adelaide.

World

  • Reiner arrest | Nick Reiner has been arrested following the death of his parents, Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner, according to Los Angeles jail records. Here’s what we know about the 32-year-old. Hollywood is in shock after the sudden death of the couple, with Rob Reiner hailed as one of the “greatest film-makers” for work including When Harry Met Sally and This Is Spın̈al Tap. Donald Trump, however, has been criticised for claiming Rob Reiner – a frequent critic of the president – was killed due to his having “Trump Derangement Syndrome”.

  • Ukraine talks | Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, has joined Donald Trump’s representatives for a second day of peace talks in Berlin, as Washington applies pressure to swiftly end the deadliest conflict in Europe since the second world war. Follow developments live. Russia’s central bank has said it is seeking $US230bn in damages from Euroclear as the Kremlin fired a warning shot against the use of Russian frozen assets to aid Ukraine.

  • Housing cost ‘pandemic’ | The soaring cost of housing is akin to a “new pandemic” sweeping across Europe, the mayor of Barcelona has said, as he and 16 other city leaders urged the EU to respond to the crisis by unleashing billions in funding for the hardest-hit areas.

  • Dei of reckoning | Buenos Aires will later today host the first-ever international gathering of former Opus Dei members who say they were tricked and trafficked into domestic servitude as minors. Pope Leo XIV privately urged organisers to convene the conference, the Guardian has learned.
