Data feeding at snail’s pace

LUCKNOW: Parents of students enrolled in state-run schools will have to wait a little before they get the money from the UP government to purchase uniforms, sweaters, shoes, socks and school bags via the direct benefit transfer (DBT) for academic session 2021-22.

Despite the basic education department working on war-footing, only 24% schools in the state have started the DBT exercise of feeding details of students and Aadhar and bank details of their parents.

Officials said within 10 days of issuance of government order on DBT, verification of Aadhar linked bank accounts of 26 lakh parents have been done via the DBT mobile application. Around 1.6 crore students from class one to eight are eligible for the DBT scheme.

In the current scenario, the target -- to release the first phase of DBT in September -- set by the chief minister Yogi Adityanath himself has already been missed. Officials said they will have some concrete data by the second week of October. “We are trying our best. The mammoth exercise of data feeding and verification is cumbersome. We expect the DBT transfer to happen in October,” said an official.

Teachers, however, feel that by the time the money is transferred and the purchase is made, half the session would have expired. “The student strength is huge. No proper training given to teachers who are now working as computer operators to feed the data,” said Vinay Singh, state-president, Primary Teachers Trained Graduate Association.
