IWAKUNI, Yamaguchi -- The maker of sake brand Dassai announced Monday that it has halted production after its brewery was flooded due to record rainfall that primarily devastated western Japan.
Asahi Shuzo Co. said it will take at least two months to resume production. The damage is expected to be about 1.5 billion yen (about 13.5 million dollars), according to the company based in Iwakuni, Yamaguchi Prefecture.
The first floor of the company's head office that houses the brewery was flooded and has lost power, the company said. At the time, brewing for about 300,000 bottles of Dassai was taking place, but the company will discard the product because the temperature could not be controlled.
The incident is expected to impact future production of about 600,000 bottles of Dassai, Asahi Shuzo said.
