Dashcam footage shows plane skimming motorway before crashing into field

The light aircraft crash landing north of Toronto's small Buttonville airport ( Twitter )

A light aircraft narrowly avoided crashing into a dual carriageway after its wing skimmed the road before landing in a field.

The pilot and passenger were said to have sustained only minor injuries after the small plane, a Cirrus SR20, missed the runway at Toronto's Buttonville airport.

The aircraft was flying circuits – where the pilot practices take-offs and landings on a continuous loop – when it missed the runway, crossing in front of traffic and stopping on a bank on the other side of the road.

An air crash investigator from Canada's Transportation Safety Board has been sent to the scene.

A photo of the plane, which landed upright, was shared by the agency, which said the aircraft had suffered "significant damage during a runway excursion".

Dash-cam footage of Tuesday's landing, shared by Tom Podolec, a photojournalist at CTV News, showed the moment the plane crossed in front of car traffic on 16th Avenue, which runs north of the airfield.
