Dashcam footage shows car smash into broken down vehicle on M62 inches from man on phone

This is the moment a car smashed into the back of a broken down vehicle in the fast lane of the M62 - inches from its stranded 'driver'.

The shocking dashcam footage shows shards of glass and car debris flying through the air on the moment of impact.

In the footage the broken down car is shunted towards the central reservation barriers and perilously close to a man, understood to be its driver, who appears to be in the middle of a phone call.

Amazingly police have confirmed nobody was injured in the smash on the M62 westbound at J5 Bowring Park around 9am on Wednesday.

Today the man who recorded the remarkable dashcam footage from his LandRover Discovery told the ECHO the driver of the broken down car "is the luckiest driver out there".

Andy Pope, 60, from Widnes who was travelling to work in Liverpool said: "I could see there was car stuck in lane three and wondered whether the car in front was going to see it.

"I  didn't even have time to blow my horn and I pulled into the middle lane. I just saw the black car was going to go into the back of it [the broken down car].

"In my rear view mirror I could see a man jumping up and down and jesticulating. He was between the central reservation barrier. He is the luckiest driver out there."

Tom, who works for a housing association, said he phoned the police straight away and "had a strong cup of coffee".

And he vividly remembers the scary moment the car in front struck the stationary vehicle.

He said: "The glass exploded and it was like hail stones, I got a little scrape on my door. That's how close I was."

Merseyside Police 's roads policing unit confirmed people in both cars had a lucky escape with no injuries reported.

Two lanes had to be closed at the time.
