Dash-cam vision reveals car chase moments after Sydney toddler's death

Christopher Chandler used ice the day before the car chase.

Police dash-cam vision has revealed the erratic driving behaviour of a man who was jailed for at least 13 years for killing a Sydney toddler when he ploughed into a suburban backyard during a high-speed pursuit in January 2015.

Christopher Chandler was 22 years old when he drove a stolen Audi through a fence at Constitution Hill, in the city's north-west, and ran over 18-month-old Tateolena Tauaifaga, who was crushed while playing outside.

Two six-year-old girls were also knocked to the ground.

The court heard Chandler had never held a driver's licence, had used the drug ice the day before and was previously involved in a high-speed police chase.

In sentencing, Justice Peter Johnson said residents in Constitution Hill had no idea "their peaceful summer evening was soon to be shattered by a terrifying homicidal event".

"Rather than surrender to police, the offender decided to make good his escape," he said.

Justice Johnson said Chandler's conduct was desperate and self-obsessed.

"A little child died because the offender chose to use the vehicle he was driving as a battering ram," he said.

Tateolena was killed during Chandler's desperate attempt to flee police.

Chandler's sentence and identity was suppressed until Wednesday, when he pleaded guilty on another matter involving armed robbery.

The video, released to the media for the first time, shows a car speeding along the Cumberland Highway, reaching speeds of up to 140 kilometres per hour in an 80kmph zone.

During sentencing, Justice Johnson outlined Chandler's "substantial criminal history", dysfunctional upbringing, mental health problems and drug abuse.

"The offender was effectively hell-bent on his own escape without any concern for other persons," he said.

Chandler was sentenced to a maximum 19 years' jail for manslaughter, but that will increase when he is sentenced on the armed robbery charges.
