Daryl Jacob lands incredible 3,275/1 five-timer at Wincanton

Daryl Jacob had a day to remember on Saturday as he tasted victory on five of his mounts at Wincanton.

The five-timer had accumulated odds 3,275/1 and it was the first time Jacob rode so many winners in one day.

Ede'iffs Elton (7/2) got the ball rolling for the Wexford jockey in the third race on the card before Messire Des Obeaux (9/4) landed the Grade 2 Paddy Power Dipper Novices' Chase, which was switched to Wincanton after Cheltenham's New Year Day's meeting was abandoned due to a waterlogged track.

Jacob had further wins on Capeland (6/1), Anightinlambourn (3/1) and Jackson Hill (7/1).

Speaking after the last race of the day, Jacob told Racing TV: "It's a lovely achievement, but a lot of credit has to go to the horses.

"They produced it today as well and I'm very lucky to be sat on their back and steering them around.

"I had some good rides coming into today and it could have been one of those days where I could have hit the crossbar all day, but thankfully the horses have done their bit as well and they've got me out of trouble."

He added on Twitter last night: "My first ever 5 timer!!! Brilliant to ride 5 different winners for 5 different trainers. Messire was fantastic once again and also great to go back to my roots with one for Rob Walford."

Speaking after Messire Des Obeaux's win, trainer Alan King said: “That definitely brought a smile to my face – I’m delighted.

“He wasn’t going to run in the race if it was run at Cheltenham as that would have been way too soon – he wasn’t even entered for it. The race only came into the equation after it was moved and if he hadn’t run here, he’d probably have gone to Huntingdon for a novice handicap.

“He seems as good as he ever was. I can’t think of bringing one back from that long off the track to win, not at that level anyway.

“He is a good horse and that is the reason we persevered and persuaded the owners to bring him back, as they were going to retire him in France. I begged them to bring him back for another crack. A lot of work has gone in to get him back, from my vets and all the team here.

“It doesn’t always come off, so it’s lovely when it does.”

Considering future plans for his charge, the trainer added: “We’ll take it one day at a time. We’ll probably enter him for the Festival, but I am a little bit nervous about taking horses that have had leg problems to Cheltenham, just with the undulations and everything.

“I’m not saying he won’t go there, but I would be slightly worried about it.”

Jacob has just one mount at Exeter today after Vinnie The Hoddie was declared a non-runner.

He partners Normandy Soldier in the MansionBet Bet 10 Get 20 Handicap Chase (Challenger Staying Chase Series Qualifier) at 3.10pm.
