Darwin has been shaken after a magnitude-6.2 earthquake in the Banda Sea was felt across the Top End region.
The earthquake occurred at about 1:30am local time and was felt by at least 600 residents across Darwin and Palmerston, according to reports made to Geoscience Australia.
It was also felt as far as Katherine, 300 kilometres south of Darwin, and Kununurra in Western Australia.
The Joint Australian Tsunami Warning Centre said there was no tsunami threat to the Australian mainland, islands or territories.
No reports of damage have been made in Australia or nearby Timor Leste.
Senior seismologist at Geoscience Australia Hugh Glanville said Darwin is a very active area for earthquakes.
"Even in the last year we have recorded 33 earthquakes in that local area just north of Darwin in that Banda Sea," he said.
"So they're very common, 33 a year, that's a few a month that can be felt in Darwin."
In January, people across Australia's north were awoken by a magnitude-7.6 earthquake in the Banda Sea that was felt in parts of Timor-Leste and Indonesia.
At the time, seismologists said it was the largest in the area since 2010.
