Darwin Nunez shirt number confirmed as Liverpool announce signing

Liverpool have confirmed the signing of Darwin Nunez from Benfica and he will wear the number 27 shirt next season.

The deal could see the 22-year-old become the club's record signing with an initial fee of £64.1million (€75m) and a possible £21.3m (€25m) in add-ons. He has signed a six-year deal that will keep him at Anfield until at least 2028.

The announcement video showed the player at the club's AXA Training Centre in Kirkby and he was wearing the number 27 shirt that was left vacant by the departed Divock Origi. The Belgium international is a free agent this summer following the expiration of his contract.

Nunez will begin his Liverpool career on July 1 when the transfer window opens for overseas signings. At Benfica, the Uruguay international wore the nine shirt but it's currently occupied by Roberto Firmino, who is still under contract until next summer.

For his national side, he wears the number 11 shirt which is currently worn by Mohamed Salah who also still has another year left on his Liverpool contract.

The move comes as Liverpool prepare for life without Sadio Mane, who has been the subject of interest from Bayern Munich in recent weeks. The ECHO understands Liverpool are yet to receive a third bid from the Bundesliga champions after rejecting a £30m package last week.
