"Oi. Should I tell you what I just did?"
Within minutes of setting fire to a Darwin city hostel room, Dylan Barfoot was captured on CCTV telling his taxi driver what he'd just done.
"I just threw a Molotov cocktail at this c**t's front door. The whole thing lit up on fire, it was crazy," he was heard saying.
The footage was shown to the Northern Territory Supreme Court last week, when Barfoot pleaded guilty to a charge of arson.
In it, he's seen getting out of a taxi on Lindsey Street in the Darwin CBD and walking towards room 104 before setting fire to a bottle and throwing the lit Molotov cocktail at the door.
Barfoot makes a quick getaway towards his waiting cab but is seen being tackled by an onlooker.
He escapes, gets back into the car and tells his driver: "Let's go. We gotta go."
During the drive he's heard explaining to the driver he lit the flame because his friend had been seeing his ex-girlfriend.
"So, I threw a Molotov cocktail at his front door and then the other c**t tackled me, so I knocked him out," Barfoot said.
The taxi's CCTV also captured Barfoot struggling to pay the driver at the end of the trip.
"[My boss] will pay me tomorrow then I'll pay you the 40 bucks," he said.
"I'm not a bad dude."
Barfoot is then heard giving the driver his full name, phone number and home address.
Five days later, Barfoot was arrested by NT Police and taken to the Palmerston watch house.
According to a statement of facts released by the court, Barfoot had bought a lighter from Coles Express and called for a taxi because he needed to "go into town and back real quick".
He told the taxi driver to wait for him at the Frogs Hollow Backpackers, because he was "only gonna be two seconds".
On Thursday, Barfoot was sentenced to two-and-a-half years in prison.
His sentence will be suspended, on conditions, after 10 months.
According to the statement of facts, the damage to the Frogs Hollow Backpackers totalled $990.
