Darwin court issues warrant for banned sports scientist Stephen Dank

A court has issued a warrant for disgraced sports scientist Stephen Dank after he failed to appear on charges of fraud, forgery and causing serious harm.

NT police charged the 56-year-old late last year but his case has been adjourned nine times since his first appearance.

Neither Mr Dank nor his lawyer showed at the Darwin Local Court for a mention listed on Wednesday afternoon.

Court officers tried to contact Mr Dank by phone three times.

The last call was picked up by a lawyer who told the court he no longer represented Mr Dank.

"I'm not satisfied the situation can be allowed to continue this way," Judge John Neill said.

"I order a warrant on oath to issue."

Mr Dank is currently living interstate.

The order allows Northern Territory police to issue a warrant for Mr Dank's arrest if they prove he was absent from court.

Mr Dank was at the centre of a national supplement scandal in 2012, leading an injection program that saw 34 Essendon Football Club players slapped with 12-month bans from AFL competition in 2016.

A dozen NRL Cronulla Sharks players were also suspended from the NRL.

The AFL Anti-Doping Tribunal handed Mr Dank a lifetime ban from working in the AFL in 2015.

He is also banned from all sports which have accepted the World Anti-Doping Code.
