Darwin brothers charged over alleged stabbing murder in northern suburb of Karama

Two brothers have been charged with murder after stabbing incidents in a Darwin suburb that left one man dead and a woman suffering significant injuries to her stomach.

Paramedics were called to the scene just before midnight on Wednesday after security guards alerted authorities to an assault on Kalymnos Drive near the Karama Shopping Plaza.

Police say a 20-year-old man had been stabbed with an "edged weapon" and was taken to Royal Darwin Hospital in a critical condition, where he died a short time later.

The woman, aged 25, was also taken to hospital where she remains in a serious but stable condition.

Matthew Gardiner, 26, and his brother Peter Gardiner, 20, were held in police custody overnight and appeared in Darwin Local Court this morning facing a number of charges.

Matthew Gardiner has been charged with murder and attempted murder and Peter Gardiner has been charged with murder, being armed with an offensive weapon, trespass and breach of bail.

The brothers' lawyer, Marty Aust, sought to adjourn both cases until July 21 and did not apply for bail.

The court heard that Peter Gardiner was already due to face court on three other matters.

"Those matters I am asking also to be adjourned to the date of the more serious matter … I am assuming we can sort those ones out, but they are no longer a pressing concern," Mr Aust said.

The request was granted by Judge Greg Cavanagh.

The court heard Matthew Gardiner was also facing court with a litany of prior charges, including outstanding breaches of bail.

Early yesterday morning, NT Police established two crime scenes in the area as they carried out their investigation.

Roadblocks were in place for a number of hours and mounted police were sent to the area to reassure the community.

At an NT Police press conference yesterday, Detective Senior Sergeant Jakson Evans said it was "not uncommon to deploy police" to provide reassurance.

Senior Sergeant Evans said it was too early in the investigation for police to come to a "definitive conclusion" on motives.
