Darvin Ham: LeBron James could play in the NBA until he is 50

LeBron James confirmed last week that he will return to the Los Angeles Lakers for his 21st NBA season this fall, despite a comment several weeks ago that implied he would consider retirement this offseason.

Perhaps the biggest question surrounding him the last few years is how long he can continue to play at an elite or even an All-Star level, and how long he even wants to continue playing.

Rich Paul, James’ longtime friend who is also his agent, recently said the four-time champion could play into his mid-40s. Lakers head coach Darvin Ham went a step further and said during an interview with SiriusXM NBA Radio that he thinks James could hold up in the league until he is 50.

Via Lakers Nation:

“At this age, what he is doing is unprecedented. Hopefully, he has a few more years to come, but if there is anybody that can do it, he can play until he is probably 50. Just the way he takes care of himself, his nutrition, his sleep habits, the regimen, everything he does pre-work, during the work, post-work, his regimen, everything he does to make himself not just available, but elite.”

James reportedly spends at least $1 million a year to keep his body right. He has also cited getting plenty of sleep as a big reason he is still putting up great numbers at age 38.

If he is lucky enough to avoid any major injuries that may jeopardize the rest of his career, it may come down to how much longer he wants to play versus how much longer he is able to play.
