Darvel chief John Gall delighted with exposure on town ahead of crucial Falkirk Scottish Cup clash

John Gall says he’s heard stories about people talking about Darvel as far away as London.

The small East Ayrshire town hit national headlines when their sixth-tier side disposed of Scottish football giants Aberdeen last month.

And now, as they gear up for a sold-out home clash on TV against Falkirk, club chairman Gall admits it has been an incredible response.

He told the Kilmarnock Standard: “There has been a massive media interest in the team now, I’ve never seen anything like it, it’s all anyone talks about in the town.

“It’s brilliant, every shop you go into, someone says, ‘oh Darvel are on the telly again!’, the attention is brilliant.

“It’s great for everyone, great for the town, it’s great.

“I heard a story that someone was phoning BT and they got passed through to someone in London.

“The guy asked, ‘what is your address’ and he said he lived in Darvel. The guy then got excited, asking, ‘is that Darvel who beat Aberdeen?’

“You’re getting stories like that all the time now, it’s fantastic!”

Gall added: “The whole town is buzzing, the fans are turning out in their numbers even in the terrible weather at games.

“People are going by asking, ‘do you think we can get to the final?’

“It’s great, it’s not just the guys that come every week, everyone is talking about it, they’ve never seen anything like it in their lives.”

“Let’s just hope we turn up on the day and give a good account of ourselves and who knows?”
