Darts star Michael van Gerwen says Irish youngster Keane Barry could have huge future in the game

Irish darts up-and-comer Keane Barry could have a huge future in the game, according to world champion Michael van Gerwen .

The Irish youngster won the Tom Kirby Memorial Irish Matchplay last weekend, beating Liam Gallagher from Galway in the final at Citywest.

The past fortnight also saw him win the Junior International Open in Gibraltar, qualify for the Junior World Championship final and secure a PDC World Championship shot.

And Van Gerwen, who trained with the 17-year-old from Duleek County Meath, praised Barry in an RTE interview, saying: "He's a phenomenally talented player.

"Of course, he was a bit lucky that he won this game because he under-performed, I was practicing with him and he's got a lot more talent in there.

"I think he had some nerves, but that's all part of the game, he's a good guy to practice with and I enjoyed it.

"I want to wish him all the best, and with his qualification for the World Championship, I think his career is going to start now.

"He needs to do really well and make the right decisions in life."
