Darts: Ross Montgomery wins back-to-back titles for the first time

Greenhills darts star Ross ‘The Boss’ Montgomery won back-to-back titles for the first time in his career this week.

The 57-year-old claimed the Italian Grand Masters title in Bologna just seven days after winning the Czech Open title.

His success in Prague was his first trophy win in over two years and Montgomery took his rich vein of form into the Grand Masters, defeating high ranking stars Richard Veenstra and Jim Williams before beating defending champion Wesley Harms in the final.

The Dutchman had won the title three years running, but the Boss put a stop to his winning streak with a 6-3 triumph on Saturday.

Montgomery, who has now won 20 career titles, said: “It’s pretty special. That’s the first time I’ve done it in my career and to beat all of the top three seeds in the BDO rankings makes it even more special.

“I’m playing well and confident when I’m up there.

“I just kept the same focus as the previous weekend.

“I didn’t miss any practice sessions between the tournaments and I will be practicing more in the next few weeks to get prepared for the World Championships in January.”

Ross enjoyed his win a little too much, however.

He was also due to compete in the Italian Open the following day, but didn’t make his first round match, which was awarded as a 4-0 walkover for Andrea Chiodo.

The Boss added: “I slept in and didn’t play. Enough said on that one!”
