Dartford Crossing and M25 have hour-long delays due to pedestrian and car fire

Traffic at a standstill on M25 - (National Highways)

The Dartford Crossing was blocked due to a pedestrian on the bridge on Tuesday evening, with hour-long delays in both directions.

The M25 and the crossing were earlier delayed by a car fire which caused traffic chaos across parts of Essex and Kent.

National Highways said “delays are rapidly building” for motorists at the A282 southbound between the M25 Junction 31 and Junction 1A the Queen Elizabeth II Bridge over the River Thames.

Stationary traffic is reported in both directions on the motorway close to Lakeside shopping centre, Thurrock, Purfleet, Grays, Romford, Basildon towards Dartford, Kent.

It is understood the vehicle was ablaze before the tunnel.

At the same time near the crossing, emergency services received reports of “a member of the public who is walking around and crossing between both sides.

“Police are still en-route to remove the pedestrian. Sixty minute delays in both directions.”

Separately, the M25 clockwise between J21a St Albans in Hertfordshire has reopened after car there overturned.

Meanwhile, there are delays caused by a vehicle fire on the M1 heading southbound between Junction 8 for Hemel Hempstead and Junction 6 near the M25 and Watford.
