Darryl Roberts contract breakdown: Could he start after Jets guarantee $4 million?

Darryl Roberts is back in the fold for the Jets — and he’s getting a substantial raise.

According to ESPN’s Rich Cimini, Roberts got a three-year deal worth $18 million. As for the guarantees, Roberts will get $4 million at signing with $1 million of it as his base salary and a $3 million roster bonus.

In 2020, $2 million of his $5 million base salary becomes fully guaranteed on the fifth day of the 2020 league year. His cap charges are $4.5M, $6M and $7.5M, while his APY is 33rd among all NFL cornerbacks.

Roberts had a breakout season last year, stepping up in relief when Trumaine Johnson and Marcus Maye were injured. Roberts played in all 16 games with 10 starts. He had a career-high 48 tackles as well as seven pass defenses and one interception.

He was put at both cornerback and free safety and may have earned himself a starting role next season as the No. 2 cornerback. If so, the Jets would be getting quite the bargain.

The Jets can still go into free agency and sign a cornerback to compliment Johnson on the other side, but the market hasn’t really developed as of yet. As of now, Roberts will at least have a shot at the job.
