Darren Randolph not ready to slow down despite picking up player of the year accolade with Middlesbrough

Darren Randolph has no intention of resting on his laurels after picking up a couple of Middlesbrough's player of the year awards last term from his team-mates and the club's supporters.

The first-choice Ireland netminder returned for pre-season training last weekend after a hectic end of season schedule due to the Euro 2020 qualifier games against Denmark and Gibraltar.

“It’s been a busy summer,” said Randolph. “We had a training camp and two qualifiers so it was an extra few weeks, but it was good. I had a few weeks off and it was back to it again at the weekend.

“It was nice to pick up another award. They are nice accolades to have, being recognised and appreciated by your peers.

“It was a great year personally, and I have to try and top or match last season. It’s going to be tough, but I’ll work hard.”

While he was on Ireland duty, Middlesbrough were making management changes as Jonathan Woodgate replaced Tony Pulis in the hot-seat and Ireland assistant manager Robbie Keane was installed in a similar role on Teeside.

“I know Robbie from the Irish set-up, and then joining Mick McCarthy,” said Randolph. "Obviously, I know Woody from being here.

Aynsley Pears, Brad James, and Zach Hemming are the other Boro keepers on their current training camp in Austria

“Pearsy, Zach and Brad have all trained with me at different times,” said Randolph. “I know them all well, but it’s strange coming back now Lonners and Dimi have gone, and I’m the oldest one.

"It’s like I’ve aged in a summer! I’m 32 and they’re 21, 19, and 19 so it feels like a different role.

“I enjoy it and it’s nice if I can pass on any information and help them. They’re starting their careers and I had experienced goalkeepers to ask questions to.

“It’s hotter now than it was last year (training at home). It was freezing then, not 36 degrees like it was on Sunday.

“These trips are good. There’s a lot of young boys in the squad, hopefully it’ll give them confidence and it’ll be good to get to know them”.
