Darren McFadden 'surprised' by inactive decision, will decide future in offseason

FRISCO, Texas _ Darren McFadden has played one snap this season for the Dallas Cowboys. He lost two yards on a carry against the Atlanta Falcons two weeks ago.

But McFadden thought he may get more opportunities going forward with Ezekiel Elliott serving a six-game suspension. That, however, is not the case.

In fact, the Cowboys opted to have McFadden inactive for last Sunday's game against the Philadelphia Eagles and carry just two running backs (Alfred Morris and Rod Smith).

"Surprised the hell out of me," McFadden said. "But that's what they decided, man. That's just what it is right now."

McFadden found out about the Cowboys decision just a couple hours before kickoff. It's becoming a more and more frustrating season for McFadden as he can't seem to get on the field.

This is a guy who ranked fourth in the league in rushing with 1,089 yards in 2015. But he's had two lost seasons by missing 13 games last year coming off elbow surgery, and being active in just one of the Cowboys' 10 games this season.

McFadden, 30, is set to become a free agent and will contemplate his future playing days after the season.

"When the offseason gets here, I'll sit down and think about it," McFadden said. "Try to get away from the game for a little while and just make a decision from there."

For the time being, McFadden is handling himself as a professional and will continue to be an option should the Cowboys need him. He could be inactive again for the Thanksgiving Day game against the Los Angeles Chargers coming on a short week and the Cowboys dealing with linebacker injuries.

"It's very frustrating," McFadden said, "but at the end of the day they make their decisions, and I can't do nothing but roll with them."
