Darren Fletcher’s involvement as a Manchester United first-team coach is believed to have played a significant role in Paul Pogba’s rejuvenated form.
The French midfielder faced calls to be removed from the Red Devils’ squad last month after controversial claims by agent Mino Raiola suggested Pogba’s time at Old Trafford was ‘over’.
But the World Cup winner has let his football do the talking of late, having scored winners against Fulham and Burnley.
Fletcher has helped Pogba to improve his defensive work, demonstrated by the fact that the 27-year-old has made more recoveries than any of his teammates, completed more passes and made as many tackles as Fred since the Scot was promoted to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s coaching team.
Initially deployed in a youth coaching role with the Under-16s in October, Fletcher has been fast-tracked to the first-team and has wasted little time in making his mark.
“Darren has the United DNA running through his veins and he knows exactly what it takes to be a Manchester United player,” Solskjaer told The Sun
“He is at the start of his coaching career and his experience both on and off the pitch, along with his winning mentality, commitment and hard work, will be a great addition to the staff.”
It’s understood that Fletcher’s promotion has been well-received by members of the team, with a clear sense of progression being made by Solskjaer’s squad.
Pogba is one of those who has backed the appointment of the former United midfielder, though this is not the first time the pair have crossed paths.
Fletcher and Pogba wee part of the United set-up during Sir Alex Ferguson’s reign and now find themselves reunited a decade later.
