Darren Fletcher names the only player who could handle Jose Mourinho at Manchester United

Former Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher has named Zlatan Ibrahimovic as the only player who could handle Jose Mourinho during his time at Old Trafford.

The Portuguese boss, now at Tottenham, left United in December 2018 following a disappointing sequence of results.

However, Fletcher has suggested that United's failings under Mourinho weren't necessarily his fault, claiming that many players couldn't handle the demands placed on them.

Fletcher highlighted the departure of Ibrahimovic in March 2018 as the start of the downfall of the experienced boss.

"Everyone speaks about what he said about that second-place finish and in hindsight, he's probably right in saying what an achievement it was," he told beIN SPORTS.

"There were issues at the end, I don't think everyone was happy and it was the right decision for him to go in the end but he was a success and the fans respond well to him.

"They (United fans) still give him a great reception when he is there (at Old Trafford) because they realise what a difficult job he had. I just feel like he didn't have the right number of players.

"Especially when big characters like Zlatan left, who knew how to handle Jose Mourinho, we lost that. We're talking about personality and what Bruno Fernandes has brought. There's not enough personality in that Manchester United team to handle a manager like Jose Mourinho.

"Zlatan could handle Jose's criticism, he took it on the chin, went out like a man, and once that has gone, the dynamic changed. All those players couldn't handle a strong, demanding, winning manager, like we spoke about."
