Darren Fletcher makes Liverpool FC and Man City statement over Man United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Former Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher has insisted that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is the man to get the club competing with Manchester City and Liverpool at the top of the Premier League table.

United have not won a Premier League title since Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement in 2013, while City have won three in that time.

Similarly, this season, Liverpool are on course to lift their first-ever Premier League title, with United a massive 27 points behind their rivals after 21 matches.

However, there is optimism that United could return to the Champions League this season, with the club sat fifth, only five points behind Chelsea.

As a result, Fletcher has called on the United supporters to remain patient in their pursuit of a return to league titles and has reiterated his belief that Solskjaer is the perfect man in charge to lead a new revolution.

"I'm surprised by the difference of where the two teams are at right now. We knew Man City were coming, they were getting better every year, with the money, the power they had," he told Sky Sports.

"When you bring in a manager like Pep Guardiola, and that backing to buy players, you're going to be successful. I think the surprising thing is, since Sir Alex Ferguson left Manchester United, how far we have dropped and how far away we are from Manchester City and Liverpool, which is slightly worrying.

"But Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is the man to rectify that. There is a plain in place to do that. I know it may seem like there is not or people may be frustrated but United have to plan for three, four seasons down the line.

"Not for this season, not for next season because of the difference they are behind Manchester City and Liverpool. It won't happen overnight."
